Nick Kurtz extended his on-base streak to 44 games and scored the winning run in the 10th inning as the Athletics rallied for a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels in the finale of a four-game series on Thursday in Anaheim, Calif.
Kurtz had an RBI single to go along with two walks for the Athletics, who posted their third consecutive win and recorded their 14th comeback victory of the season. Shea Langeliers doubled, walked and scored a run, and Brent Rooker had two hits and was hit by a pitch.
A's reliever Joel Kuhnel (1-1) threw one scoreless inning for his first win since 2022. Mark Leiter Jr. picked up his fourth save with a scoreless 10th.
Nolan Schanuel homered and Mike Trout singled, walked and scored a run for Los Angeles, which lost its third straight game and fell for the ninth time in 10 games. Ryan Zeferjahn (2-2) yielded the decisive run.
The Athletics then took their first lead of the 10th inning without the benefit of a hit. With Langeliers starting at second as the automatic runner, Zeferjahn intentionally walked Kurtz and then hit Rooker with a pitch to load the bases.
After Langeliers was forced out at the plate on a fielder's choice by Tyler Soderstorm, Kurtz scored the go-ahead run on another fielder's choice. Zack Gelof hit a potential inning-ending double-play grounder to short. However, second baseman Adam Frazier briefly juggled the ball while taking it out of his glove, allowing Gelof to beat his throw to first by a split second.
Los Angeles took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Schanuel's fourth home run of the season, a 392-foot drive into the right field corner. The blast also drove in Trout, who had singled. It was Schanuel's first homer since April 22 and also marked the first time since May 3 that the Angels scored first in a game, a streak of 15 games.
The Athletics cut the deficit to 2-1 in the sixth inning. Langeliers hit a two-out double that one-hopped the wall in left, and he scored on Kurtz's single.
The A's tied it in the seventh. Gelof reached base on a fielder's choice, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout by Jeff McNeil and scored on a line-drive single to center by Darell Hernaiz.
Athletics starter Luis Severino struck out 10 while throwing seven innings of two-run ball. He gave up three hits and no walks.
Angels starter Jose Soriano permitted two runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings. He fanned seven and walked one.
