San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy will miss his second straight game and fourth in the past five due to his turf toe injury when the 49ers visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.
Purdy was initially injured during the season-opening game against the Seattle Seahawks and aggravated it during a Week 4 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan said earlier this week that the team isn't considering placing Purdy on injured reserve.
Complicating matters is that backup quarterback Mac Jones is dealing with knee and oblique injuries and is listed as questionable. Jones aggravated the left knee ailment and injured the oblique during a victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Oct. 2.
Jones completed 33 of 49 passes for 342 yards and two touchdowns against the Rams. He has passed for 905 yards, six touchdowns and one interception in 129 pass attempts.
The third-string quarterback for the 49ers is Adrian Martinez, who has never played in an NFL game. He was promoted to the active roster hours before the game against the Rams.
Four other players were ruled out for the 49ers: receivers Ricky Pearsall (knee) and Jordan Watkins (calf) and defensive linemen Kevin Gaines (pectoral) and Yetur Gross-Matos (knee/hamstring).
In addition to Jones, receiver Jauan Jennings (rib/ankle), defensive linemen Alfred Collins (knee) and Kalia Davis (hand) and cornerback Upton Stout (ankle) and safety Malik Mustapha (knee).
Defensive lineman Robert Beal (ankle) didn't practice all week and is a candidate to be placed on injured reserve.
