Bruno Damiani broke a scoreless tie in the 70th minute as the Philadelphia Union defeated the New England Revolution 1-0 in Chester, Pa., on Saturday afternoon.
Milan Iloski and Frankie Westfield added an assist each for the Union (18-7-6, 60 points), who snapped a two-game losing streak across all competitions. They also improved to 3-1-0 in their last four MLS outings.
The victory also ensured that Philadelphia would remain atop the Supporters' Shield standings. It began the day one point in front of San Diego FC.
The Revs, with Pablo Moreira serving as interim head coach in their first match after Monday's firing of Caleb Porter, were eliminated from playoff contention.
New England (8-15-8, 32 points) ended the match with 10 men as Peyton Miller was shown a red card in the 75th minute.
Damiani put the Union up with just over 20 minutes remaining with his sixth goal of the season. Westfield's pass into the box found the run of Iloski, who slid it over to Damiani for the first-time finish.
That was the only goal Philadelphia needed as the Revs, despite nine shots, put just one on target.
Miller, who was assessed a yellow card in the 49th minute, was later given a straight red card after throwing the ball at the back of the Union's Tai Baribo.
Union goalkeeper Andre Blake notched one save while keeping his eighth clean sheet of the season. The Jamaican international made his first start since Aug. 16 after recovering from a hamstring injury.
Matt Turner finished with three saves for the Revs.
Philadelphia improved to 11-1-4 at home. New England, whose winless streak reached four matches (0-3-1), dropped to 5-6-5 on the road.
