India's foreign ministry said a lot of people have lost their lives in Thursday's plane crash with 242 people on board an Air India flight to London in the western state of Gujarat.

The Air India flight had 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals and one Canadian on board when it crashed shortly after takeoff from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, about 17 km south of Gandhinagar, the capital city of Gujarat.

Over 80 arrested on second night of curfew in U.S. Los Angeles

More than 80 people were arrested on the second night of curfew in Los Angeles amid protests over immigration raids in the second-largest city of the United States, authorities said on Thursday morning.

There were 71 arrests for failure to disperse and seven arrests for curfew violation, said the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) in a press release, adding that police arrested two people for assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, and one person arrested on suspicion for resisting a police officer.

Death toll climbs to 78 in Eastern Cape floods in South Africa

The death toll from the devastating floods in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa has risen to 78, with only 21 bodies identified so far, a senior government official confirmed on Thursday.

"I can confirm that the death toll from the floods has risen to 78, as more bodies continue to be recovered. This means we are facing a serious crisis," South Africa's Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Velenkosini Hlabisa told the SABC News channel on Thursday evening.

Iranian president vows to press ahead with uranium enrichment despite IAEA censure

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Thursday vowed to press ahead with uranium enrichment, dismissing a resolution by the UN nuclear watchdog that declared Tehran out of compliance with its nuclear obligations.

Speaking in Ilam province in western Iran, Pezeshkian said Iran would not alter its nuclear course despite the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) Board of Governors adopting a resolution earlier in the day.

UN General Assembly adopts resolution demanding immediate Gaza ceasefire

The General Assembly, at an Emergency Special Session, adopted a resolution on Thursday that demands an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and immediate access to humanitarian assistance at scale.

The resolution demands "an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire, to be respected by all parties."

It strongly condemns any use of starvation of civilians as a method of warfare and the unlawful denial of humanitarian access. It stresses the obligation not to deprive civilians in the Gaza Strip of objects indispensable to their survival, including by wilfully impeding relief supplies and access.
