High winds are helping spread a wildfire in the western U.S. state of California that has prompted authorities to order 8,000 households to evacuate.
The fire is located in Ventura County, about 40 kilometers northwest of Los Angeles.
Fire officials said as of Tuesday the blaze was 11,000 hectares in size and moving quickly.
The strong winds are expected to continue for several days, and Ventura County Fire Chief Mark Lorenzen said with those conditions the 500 firefighters working in the area are focusing on defending buildings instead of actually putting the fire out.
'The prospects for containment are not good,' Lorenzen said. 'Really Mother Nature is going to decide if we have the ability to put it out.'
